April Fool’s Days of Blizzard’s past

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Yes, loved by some and hated by others, tomorrow is 4/1, April 1st, known around the world (or at least the Internet) as April Fool’s Day, and odds are that you’ll have a lot of fools trying to play with your head. As you probably know, our friends at Blizzard love April Fool’s, so you can probably expect to see some shenanigans from them tomorrow.

Just to get you ready, here’s a quick roundup of what they’ve done in the past few years. It seems like they’ve been upping the ante for a while now, so be “prepared”: you never know what we might hear from them tomorrow.

2004: Blizzard announced that two-headed Ogres would become a playable race… playable by two players, that is. Not many people fell for this one — MMOs are all about being social, but playing a character with another player? A little too wacky to be legit.

Lots more after the break, including the chaos that went down last year (Tinfoil Hats, anyone?) in the Warcraft community.

2005: Pandaren Xpress. This was the real beginning of Blizzard’s silliness — Sony had just recently announced a (real!) deal with Everquest and Pizza Hut, so the announcement by Blizzard that they’d made the same deal with a Chinese food chain sounded legit to many news outlets (including Slashdot), and got quite a bit of coverage for a joke. Blizzard must have smelled blood in the water, because after this, April Fool’s Day was never the same for them.

2006: The first year that others picked up on Blizzard’s jokes and started kicking off their own. The official joke was about Wisps as a playable race — everyone was wondering just who the Alliance race was in the Burning Crusade (later revealed as the Draenei), and a lot of people bought the “Detonate” racial ability, though the “permanent death” feature was really the giveaway here. But the official joke wasn’t the only one: Blizzard as a company gave some official credence to the BurgerCraft rumors, and Caydiem posted those (still brilliant) fake patch notes for the upcoming patch 1.11. And thanks to Gamespot, rumors of a “World of Starcraft” (along with a “leaked screenshot”) also swirled around.

2007: And last year things went even further over the top. Blizzard announced a “new” RTS called Warcraft: Heroes of Azeroth (”WHOA,” for short) “based in the WoW Universe,” which was really the old Warcraft RTSes made to look like a WoW tie-in. The forums went a little nuts with “Blue for a Day,” as every poster but the CMs got to go blue, also resulting in Tseric’s classic “lol wut” remark (and making a few people unhappy). Unofficially, WoWWiki got turned into MeowWiki, Wowhead got sold to Blizzard (providing a weird foreshadowing for later that year), and a number of other Warcraft-related jokes flew around. But the big one was, of course, the Tinfoil Hat — with the release of the Armory earlier in the year, lots of players were concerned that their gear choices were being shown off, so Blizzard released an engineering item that would supposedly keep your character out of the Armory (as well as dropping Intellect by 10 and preventing mind control… or maybe not). And they also poked fun at all of their attunements, with a hopelessly complicated attunement chart.

What’s Blizzard got planned for this year? We haven’t heard yet, and they haven’t said. But whatever it is, if you’re the gullible type, you might want to stay off the Internets tomorrow. Blizzard has a long tradition of pulling our legs right out of their sockets on April 1st. Get those grains of salt (and, please, that sense of humor) ready.

Is WoW the Next Star Trek?

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I just read a very interesting article about WoW over at austin360.com. However, the author has never played WoW, even though he really wants to. The reason he hasn’t even bought the game is because he knows if he starts, he’ll be addicted, and that terrifies him.

He goes on to describe friends of his who obviously spend far too much time playing, but also notes that the type of people who play nowadays aren’t your standard spotty geek, but more of a mixture of the real life community.

The comparison to Star Trek is a good one too, as he points out that even people who have never seen an episode of the famous Sci Fi series still know what “Beam Me Up Scotty” means. Will every person in the future cry “Leeroy Jenkins” as they are about to embark on some foolish mission? We shall see..

Check out the article here.

Did you win?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Probably not. But if you did guess March 25th as the date patch 2.4 was released you might have an email from our own Elizabeth Harper in your inbox in the next few days. So how did you all get to guess March 25th as the magical date?

Some of you might have just pulled the date out of a hat. I can’t really blame you if you did, since Blizzard has been notorious for releasing things “when they’re ready.” WoWWiki even has a page for the often-quoted blue response to people asking when the patch will be released: “soon.”

Of course, if you took my route, you would have hunkered down and done some good old math and figured out that the trend was leading towards a March 25th release date. I was, ahem, right. /dance /cheer /drinkaglassofcelebratorywine

Now of course the real test of any mathematical prediction is to see if it holds up over time. When the next patch is announced (if there is one), we’ll take another mathematical look at the numbers and try to predict when that patch will go live.

All in all, it was quite a fun little contest. Many thanks to the over 900 of you who entered. Check your mailboxes, you might have won!

For those wondering, the image is the “I Win” button they’ll be putting in patch 2.5. We know this is going to happen because of all the nerfs in 2.4… (I’m kidding, but flame away.)

Latency in Battlegrounds

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

t appears all WoW Battleground servers are suffering from high latency since the patch went live. Both EU and US Blizzard representatives have made similar statements about the current state of the Battlegrounds, but it looks like they’re working on it:

Athene’s Powerleveling Guide

Monday, March 24th, 2008

We wrote an article a few days ago about Athene, the player who claims to have leveled a character from 1 to 70 in under 2 days. Well now he’s released the first installment on how he did it.

Called “Athene: behind the scenes - #1: powerlvl like a pro”, the tongue-in-cheek movie mainly features Athene hitting back at the people who say he somehow faked his record-breaking leveling time. He then goes on to rubbish one of the existing and well known leveling guides, and provides some “useful” tips of his own on how to follow in his footsteps.

Be warned, it’s definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK, as it features frequent swearing, but if you don’t mind that then it’s worth a watch for the pure comedy value. See it below, or catch it on WoWTV,where you can rate it appropriately.

Forum Post of the Day: What type of music do Azerothians make?

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Acerba of Cenarion Circle started a pretty fun discussion the other day on her server boards: What type of music would typify various races and cultures of Azeroth? Sure, we all have our soundtracks for when we get tired of the in-game music, and the in-game music itself often has various themes that show again and again music to represent various concepts, but thinking about what music your character would listen to or what sounds you might here around a bonfire at Razor Hill (Well, besides L70ETC) or in a fine mansion in Silvermoon City is a really fun exercise. I’m one who often creates soundtracks for my PnP and MMORPG characters alike in order to understand this, so I find it a useful exercise for us roleplayers, as well.
